    Harry Hill - national treasure
A fantastic night last night. First up, to the lovely Warwick Castle pub for a drink, before heading to the Little Venice 'eaterie' The Waterway on the Grand Union Canal - a great destination on a lovely sunny June evening. A shame, then, that service was sweet and charming but oh, so rubbish. It took us half an hour before we even got served a drink.

The food was okay, though a bit laughable. My artichoke and truffle salad with green beans, croutons and a hen's egg starter for example. No truffle, no green beans, no croutons, but definitely some artichokes artfully drizzled with what was probably the chef's 'special sauce' and a poached egg that was most certainly from a female chicken's backside. I am so glad they pointed it out 'cos it could have been a dog's egg or something. My main of sea bass and basil puree was a nice bit of fish, though the sauce was like the pureed contents of a long-neglected village pond. But the viognier wine was divine. However, it took another 45 minutes to get our bill.

This meant we were half an hour late to get back up to Kilburn to see Harry Hill's band The Caterers at The Luminaire. God, I dread to think what we missed. Because the half hour I saw is the funniest thing I have seen for a long time. I won't spoil it all for you in case you haven't seen them, but a version of The National Anthem squeezed out on car horns that eventually morphs into the theme tune of Animal Hospital was definitely a highlight.

Afterwards, I got Harry to draw my artist friend Rob, who's a huge fan, a picture. There were only bar napkins to hand - but I am now looking at the most brilliant drawing of a sausage on a skateboard rendered and signed in black Biro by Harry Hill right now.

The Caterers are playing a few gigs in London (and maybe the rest of the country - I'm not sure) over the next few days - you really should go. Then you can tell me what I missed.

*sings* My Darcy's left me, I'm in a moooood
Well, I don't know that he has exactly, but the little rascal hasn't been back home for the past two nights so I'm getting a leeeeeetle bit worried. But it's not the first time - he does go off gallivanting occasionally, and Retard Cat has been terrorizing him really badly lately so maybe he's just hiding out somewhere for a bit of peace and quiet. And maybe he can sense it's time for him to get his booster jabs at the vets too so he's giving me a wide berth.

I dreamt last night that Darcy had run away to a bakery. I brought him home and it took me ages to get all the dough and flour out of his glossy black fur. I have no idea what this means.

I don't think it's karma that he's making me worried by his abscence though as I did a *good thing* on Saturday night.

It was my friend Eamonn's birthday and as a special present, I got his Number One heartthrob to ring him and wish him many happy returns - GMTV weathergirl Claire Nasir! I think he might still be blushing.

This week has been rather good so far
    I have:

Been to a birthday party where the cake was made of burnt toast tied up in ribbon with a big household candle stuck in the middle of it. It was at The Holly Bush in Hampstead, one of my favourite pubs in London. It was ace.

Won a pub quiz in London's 'trendy' Primrose Hill. Me, Bryony and Ian shared the £30 pot.

Been to Norwich to see one of my oldest friends Daren who was back over from Australia with his wife Narelle and baby. We have known each other since we were three. Lachlan's favourite word is 'door'. It was ace.

I stayed at another very old friend of mine's Rob, who lives in Norwich. He has made a wonderful animated gif of Jimmy Saville ranting about Showaddywaddy. Which was ace.

Been to see another very old friend Sandy and her baby twins the next day, also in Norwich. If I had the nous to put pictures up here, I would. Orla and Iris are two wonderful little girls. Even though I don't want my own kids, I love being auntie.

Been to a weird networking evening for people who work in marketing to accompany my friend Firg, but only for the free booze. Who ARE those idiots?! We escaped to go to Soho House for supper and to go and goose Arthur Baker.

Slept. A LOT. Obviously, just on my days off. Not working during the week obviously ROCKS.

    Oh. My. God.
Well, there I was, pounding away on the treadmill at the gym on Friday, and suddenly a vision appears before me on the telly. It's some crap show on BBC Two called The People's Museum, but staring down at me is the subject of the biggest unrequited crush I ever had.

When I was about 15, we'd became friends at school from both being good at art and he got me into Marvin Gaye. He was unbelievably good looking and I fancied him to death, but he was *way* out of my league (a year above me too) so I never let on.

Those nights where we'd be sat in my bedroom listening to 'Ain't That Peculiar' for the umpteenth time while he sipped from one of those little cans of Heineken that my mum had given him used to nearly cripple me with lust.

Last time I saw him was in the pub in the village and he'd just finished his degree in architecture. So seeing him on the telly was the first time I'd seen him in at least a decade. But look at him now!

Still gorgeous and even brainier than before! *swoon*

BBC Breakfast just rang me up to ask if I'd go on the programme tomorrow as an 'expert' to talk about Eurovision. Obviously, I said no. Hahaha.

    Yesterday, I spent the evening
sat in the Phoenix with one of my oldest bestest mates Rob drawing comedy penises on every single photo in the Evening Standard and laughing hysterically. We are both 35.

Working on a Saturday night! TSK!
I just finished though. I was writing the biog for the fantastic Robots In Disguise ahead of their debut UK single and album release. Both are great, incidentally.
I would have finished it earlier, but I had a big night out last night - though not as big as my fellow revellers. I decided it would be nice to have a ladies' night at Soho House for a bit of supper and a girly chinway, so Tash, Bryony, Mez and I descended on the Kitchen Bar (the roof terrace was full) for cocktails, artily-assembled salads and mucho gossip.
Our friend Avril was there by coincidence with a friend, so our numbers were swelled, but unfortunately I still had to bail relatively early (about 1am) due to having worked a week of early shifts and not getting enough sleep. I'd had a lovely night though - as we'd joked earlier it was ridiculously Sex In The City. After I left, the party apparently continued long into the night and finished at stupid-o'clock in some dive bar in Soho that another friend Andy was DJing at which was inexplicably filled with Greeks. See mez_le_ra_ra's blog for full details at a later date I'd imagine.
Anyway, I was fit for nothing til about lunchtime, then it was the FA Cup final (WHAT a game!) and Doctor Who (it just gets better) before I could rouse myself to get back to the computer.
I don't think Thursday night helped either. My friend Ruth came round, ostensibly to go to my nearby gastro pub, but the evening was so mild and lovely we stayed put in my garden drinking wine. I went to Marks and bought ridiculously hedonistic picnic foods - dressed lobster, garlic and chilli prawns, stuffed vine leaves etc - but we still spent less than if we'd eaten out. And frankly, sitting under the stars by the warm glow of the chiminea surrounded by candles and cats beat eating out swathed by exhaust fumes next to the Abbey Road into a cocked hat. I *love* my garden. Roll on summer.

    Book early to avoid disappointment!
No, not my birthday next December or a Wallace Arnold coach trip to Bruges, but the last Secret Vicar's Tea Party at the Notting Hill Arts Club this year THIS SUNDAY. As in, it's now summer so we shouldn't bother.
If you haven't been, you really should you know. It's rather good.
    Anyway, pictures here: http://www.nottinghillartsclub.com/
And blurb here: Modlang, Evil Genius, Tallulah Rendall, Amplifico, Evil Dick live / Head Gardener, Jody Thompson, Eddy Temple Morris decks //

As summer is now most certainly here the LAST of the Vicar's Secret Tea Parties happens this Sunday after church, or lunch (depending on your denomination). Some fine young chaps and lasses are going to play music for youse: From 6pm we have Evil Dick and The Banned Members, one hour later you can catch Tallulah Rendall. At 8pm Evil Genius takes to the stage, at 9pm Amplifico and the last live bundle of joy for the day is Modlang at 10pm.
After that dance with Jody Thompson (6music) and our own Head Gardener Djing late into the night. Plus extra special guest Eddy Temple-Morris our very own patron saint!!
Added to which The Vicar will be showing the Secret Garden Party 2005 half hour special at around 5pm. An off-the-wall and somewhat conceptual look at the Garden Party by Balti and Havana. He will of course, also, be hosting his traditional array of other godly entertainment; movies, exhibitions, board games, cucumber sandwiches and his 'special' tea!

    4pm - 1am, £5

Obviously, you can tap me up for free guest list 'cos I'm nice like that.

Have been placated somewhat from yesterday
by a grovelling email. SO! As I'm in a good mood now, I am going to share JODY'S WORLD OF THE STRANGE with you. As in odd things I have seen lately with my eyes.

    1. A very deliberate trail of Smarties along a Fenland path from a housing estate all the way to the market place in the village in a confectionary-centric Hansel and Gretel stylee. No lost children trying to find their way home were spotted.

    2. A mad man dressed as soldier sat on the tube having an argument with himself.

    3. A crumbly-faced Bonnie Langford and a malodorous-looking Victor Lewis Smith within minutes of each other in central London.

    4. I'll think of some more in a bit.

    "Oh DO buck up, Jody!"
I have been soooo slack (pardon the pun) with updating this lately, but I've been so damned busy, with lots of *behind the scenes stuff* going on that I really can't post here.

Suffice to say, Devants were excellent last Thursday, even if Nick's stupid new girlfriend went home early and took him with her 'cos she hates me so much. So I didn't really get to talk to him very much which is a real shame. I do miss him so.

My day off on Friday was spent mostly sleeping, which always happens at the end of a long stint of early shifts, then I managed to drag my pathetic arse out of bed to down the pub to wish 'bon voyage and don't forget your Geiger counter' to my friend Steve before he went off to Chernobyl the next day.

While he was flying off to the Ukraine, I was train-bound to the Fens with Firg. My mum's been very down lately so we wanted to give her a bit of Kim'n'Aggie action and help her round the house with some stuff she hasn't had the energy to do. Spring has really sprung now, and at points it was almost like being in a snowstorm out in the countryside with the blossom falling off the trees in the breeze.

We were horrified however to discover in the evening that my old stomping ground pub The Stage has been given the blonde wood and dead twigs in a vase treatment. It now has zero character. Why on earth would you do that to a 15th century coaching inn? What idiots. I sadly won't be going there again now, not even for a game of erotic spot the difference on the quiz machine.

Sunday morning was spent as ever galloping around Rutland on horseback. I can honestly say I have never seen so many woodland flowers. It's almost as if spring has taken so long to arrive, the plants have gone mad to make up for the wait. Primroses were literally carpetting the floor, with violets, wood anemones, bluebells and cowslips battling for space in between.

Back on Sunday to watch the repeat of Dr Who and The Impressionists, which my friend Charlie starts in. Jolly good he was too. Last night saw a dreadful gig at the Garage (who ever thought it was a good idea to hold a mini-fest on Bank Holiday Monday NIGHT? Well done, Artrocker, there were about 20 people there) but at least the band I went to see Kubichek were great and I got to catch up with Geordie Karen and have a spot of supper with her.

I also spent the weekend dipping into crap old horsey kids books I read when I was little. I will be liberally dropping in 1950s phrases into my everyday lexicon as a result cos it don't arf make me larf.

    Terry Hall is a *god*
He was soooo good on Friday at Bob's, although he did keep playing records I was going to play in my set after him. Bah. But he wrote a congratulatory wedding card to my friends Sam and Steve who were having their marriage bash in Manchester the next day. It's a long story, but Sam accidentally got drunk on cockails with Terry Hall once and it's become part of the legend that is Sam. So this card absolutely made her night, seeing as she didn't have a clue I was going to get it. Priceless.

It was a great weekend. Me, Tee and Hels travelled up on the train and met Sandy there, then toddled along to the hotel, which was hen party central. I never know what to make of Manchester. Every time I've been there it's to go to something specific and come back again, so I've never really had a chance to get to know it properly. It's not really the north though, that's all I really feel about it.

We got dolled up and went for dinner and pink champagne (well, we were feeling a bit hen party after the hotel and it was Hels and Sand's first night out without their babies in yonks) then tripped along to just by Canal Street for the do downstairs at a bar called Gaia. Hmm. It was Sam and Steve's last minute choice as the other venue had wanted to charge them corkage for the celebratory prosecco they'd bought and the place didn't really try very hard for them. The DJing was utterly dreadful and done by a pair of women-hating gays. I'd forgotten such a species existed. But they would not veer from their resolutely awful jazzy house to play anything that would mean something to the happy couple. And they even like dance music! After a request war of attrition fuelled by fizz we gave up. We had a great night regardless and so did Sam and Steve, we just wanted something played for our friends on the night. It's what you need at a wedding, isn't it?
Tee got an early train next day to get back to her beloved and Hels and I got a later one feeling rather hungover. Nothing like a long train journey to read the Sunday papers and restore yourself for Monday though.
I gingerly got back to my flat at around 4pm, made a bucket full of much needed tea and instantly put the repeat of Doctor Who from the night before on the Homechoice (ooh, I am so glad I had it installed).
Then I got a call on my mobile. My friends Mireia, Richie and their toddler daughter Nina had been down from Birmingham to see some friends nearby, and was I in?
Ah, after the post-Manchester comedown, it made my day. They only stayed about ten minutes but in that time, Nina gave Richie a nose bleed and had started to put my saucepan hooks from the rack that still needs hanging in the kitchen into the cat litter tray. Bless. She is so sweet.
Back to normality today though with work, but a lovely night out tonight to see my mate Mark who's come over with his band The Pinkertones (he lives in Barcelona now). They had an album launch at Madame JoJos and I went along with Cawood. Weird to see people going mad on a dancefloor at 9.30pm on a Monday.
Sadly, I had to leave the party while they trooped off to Soho House for more booze. Damn these early shifts. More tea.

    What a joy today
To open all my windows and the back door and let the fresh air flood in! It was so nice to have the smells of spring stream through the flat as I've had to spend the whole Easter weekend indoors pretty much with work - weekend in the office, today writing at home. I have tomorrow off though and hope I can actually get into the garden. I can't wait!
